Elections & Electoral Systems
Regular, efficacious, democratic elections are pivotal to consolidation of democracy. In the run-up to South Africa’s first democratic election in 1994, Idasa played a leading role in the training of electoral officers, election monitors and voters. Idasa also delivered extensive training to candidates, officials and voters in South Africa’s first democratic local government elections. It has assisted with electoral monitoring in other countries. 2004 sees elections in several Southern African countries, including South Africa.  Idasa has been involved over the years in contributing to the development of electoral systems. Good election laws legitimate electoral systems. Independent, effective election management bodies, strong and democratic political parties and active informed citizens are the essential foundations of a sustainable democracy.
