Political Governance

Idasa has a long track-record of monitoring and contributing to debate around key political governance issues mainly in South Africa. In the years preceding democracy, it facilitated numerous processes aimed at the development of democratic governance at various levels of South African society. Idasa also played a leading role in the transformation of local governance structures in South Africa, by facilitating and supporting multi-stakeholder transitional forums. After 1994, it contributed to strengthening the country’s new democracy through extensive training of elected representatives. Idasa’s political governance work now involves monitoring democratic and political progress, providing political analysis, and assisting with building institutions of governance to consolidate democracy in eighteen countries in Africa. This is achieved extensively at local and national levels, as well as in regional bodies such as NEPAD, the AU, and SADC. Work includes research, workshop facilitation, technical assistance, political analysis, project management, and social justice advocacy.
