Idasa, the Forum of African former Heads of State and Government and the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy, three leading regional and international organisations in democracy development, have launched the initiative for Leadership and Democracy in Africa (iLEDA). iLEDA is a democracy training programme for political and civic leaders from across Africa. It offers three programmes: the Political Leadership Programme (iLEDA Academy), the Citizen Leadership Programme (iLEDA School) and tailor-made consulting services (iLEDA Consulting) on training and leadership development. The initiative provides beneficiaries of training the possibility of becoming a member of the iLEDA Alumni network. Through this network alumni can interact with their peers throughout their careers, access information related to their work and to leadership development and stay informed about follow-up trainings and services offered by iLEDA.
iLEDA believes in equal opportunities for participation by women and men in all its training as well as participation by people with disabilities.
iLEDA Mission
iLEDA’s mission is to strengthen democracy in Africa by preparing a new generation of civic and political leaders to be effective agents of change.
iLEDA Identity
iLEDA believes that African democratic leadership has made much headway in the decades since African states attained independence. Building on the best practices and examples from across the continent and beyond, iLEDA offers a uniquely African democracy training approach. It finds its inspiration in combining traditional means of transferring knowledge and experience from one generation to another with cutting edge IT tools that make information sharing more flexible and accessible. iLEDA’s curriculum and training method finds further inspiration in adult education, experiential learning, participatory training, discussion and more traditional forms of teaching.
iLEDA supports the idea that there is a universal basis of democratic leadership regardless of political affiliation, doctrine and beliefs, and it is this universal basis for democratic leadership that iLEDA strengthens through its trainings.
iLEDA believes, furthermore, that training should always be accompanied by a sustained post-training follow-up programme. It therefore offers follow-up courses for participants from the Academy and the School in addition to an alumni network that will remain involved with iLEDA and its philosophy through cutting edge technology.
