Many migrants send money and goods home to their families, but this has seldom been measured. SAMP recently released a study on this flow of goods and cash, which we report on in this month's newsletter. You'll also see a new book out on a Transformation Agenda for Zimbabwe, which comes from a series of consultations with stakeholders in the region. Shifting Political Landscape - South African Election Analysis
After months of anticipation, widespread speculation and tireless campaigning by political parties, the 2009 elections have come and gone. As expected, the African National Congress (ANC) has once again been delivered an emphatic mandate to govern, winning 65.9% of the national vote and a majority in eight of the nine provinces.
However, despite the appearance that the political landscape has remained largely the same, the ANC’s support base has indeed shifted. For the first time since 1994,...

Democracy in Action - March 2009
April 2009 is the first South African election with so much rivalry in the same political space. Some say this is because of the introduction of COPE - a breakaway party for which no analysts can safely commit figures of support - so we have a large question mark, and a lot of uncertainty. Our newsletter has an SA Election Special which highlights all of our coverage of the elections. Also don't miss our articles about Zimbabwe, Kenya and the DRC.

The agreement finally signed between warring Zimbabwean parties also made February a landmark month - and...
