Africa could provide enough food to feed its population - this we know simply because of the sheer number of Africans who are currently engaged in rural smallholder agricultural activities. Smallholder agriculture can address food insecurity and is crucial to overall economic growth. Therefore, investing in rural and small farmers is crucial to economic prosperity in Africa. This has begun in earnest through the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) drawn up by the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) for African governments to allocate more than 10% of their national expenditure to agriculture. Listen to Leslie Nyagah of Idasa's Economic and Governance Programme talk more about this here.
