No Information, no peace: How parliamentarians will benefit from freedom of information legislation

Current parliamentary debate within South Africa on the proposed Protection of Information Bill has got NGOs like Idasa worried about the threat it poses to the existing transparency framework which protects the public’s right to know. Nancy Dubosse, manager of research in Idasa’s Economic Governance Programme, looks further afield to the state of access to information in other parts of Africa and warns that the current weakness of many African parliaments, leaving them unable to defend and legislate for the right to information, compromises this fundamental tenet of democracy.
